The Opening Calderoni STUDIO/Gallery
In 2002 the opening of Calderoni Studio/Gallery was the beginning of the renaissance of a once-thriving textile factory, Fabrica La Aurora, which has now become the most important tourist destination in San Miguel and renamed the “Fabrica Aurora Art and Design Center”. Behind an elegant facade of arches and gates constructed at the turn of the 20th century lie 75 galleries, boutiques, artist studios and four restaurants and cafes in the former factory workrooms which once hummed to spinning looms creating manta for the textile industry which, in North America, ground to a halt in the early 1990’s.
In 2001, being the first to want to see the potential for using one of the empty spaces as a studio, Calderoni chose the soaring, light-filled former machine shop, which included the working “Fragua” or forge where artisans used to create and repair the metal components required for the efficient operation of the mill. In the past 20 years, the space has seen many changes from a practically empty studio to the beautiful, white contemporary gallery of today with large colorful paintings and sculptures well-placed in the large space. For years, Merry Calderoni was a “one-person show”, but in the past 3 years the gallery has been host to a range of artists from many countries. During these years the gallery has been the scene of over 200 openings and Calderoni looks forward to many more.
